Tesla's Gigafactory Berlin has hit a major milestone: 750,000 Model Y vehicles produced since the plant opened in Grünheide in March 2022. The company shared the news in a video posted on X, announcing plans to raise car production by 20 percent from summer 2026, targeting around 6,000 vehicles per week.
But Tesla is thinking well beyond cars. The company has now confirmed an investment of approximately 250 million US dollars in its Brandenburg facility. According to rbb24, the money will fund battery cell production on site. Right now, Grünheide only makes battery components, with cells shipped in from the US. From 2027, Tesla plans to produce everything at a single location, from battery cell to finished electric vehicle. The company says this will be unique in Europe and will strengthen supply chain resilience.
The expansion means a lot of new jobs. Tesla plans to grow its battery production workforce from around 450 to 2,000 employees, with 350 hires planned for this year alone. Add the 1,000 new roles in vehicle manufacturing, and up to 2,500 new positions could be created in Grünheide. Around 500 temporary workers are also set to move into permanent contracts.
Brandenburg's Economics Minister Martina Klement welcomed the announcement, pointing out that Germany remains capable of attracting major industrial investments, despite ongoing debates about economic uncertainty.
Tesla is also opening a new research and development center in Berlin this year, focused on vehicle technology and drivetrains, with 250 positions still to be filled.
