OpenAI is expanding its footprint in Germany, and Berlin is the next stop. Speaking to Handelsblatt, OpenAI chief Sam Altman confirmed the company will open a second German office in the capital, adding to the Munich location it launched in early 2025. No exact opening date was given, but Altman said it would happen fairly soon.

The move reflects how important the German market has become for OpenAI. According to the company, Germany is its largest European market for paying ChatGPT subscribers and ranks among the top three worldwide. Altman called Germany one of OpenAI's biggest and fastest growing markets, and said local businesses are among the most aggressive adopters of its tools.

He also hinted at more investment to come, saying OpenAI is looking into building additional infrastructure in the country. Talks with Chancellor Friedrich Merz and Finance Minister Lars Klingbeil about a German data center have so far gone nowhere, but Altman said he hopes Germany will move forward on data center capacity, even as German companies are already integrating AI deeply into their operations.

Berlin itself is no stranger to the AI boom. With more than 500 startups working in the field, the city is Germany's leading AI location, and anyone curious about the local AI ecosystem can find more details at ai.berlin.
